FIRST ALARM | Chris Bailey is pursuing a cold setup in mid-October

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – When it comes to weather, it’s a whole new ballgame. The coldest air since early spring has entered Kentucky and could even bring the season’s first flakes to the highest mountains of the Appalachians. For the rest of us, we’ll have to settle for frost and a light frost.

Temperatures today will be in the 50s in central and eastern Kentucky and in the low 60s in the west.

Skies will have a mix of sun and clouds, with more clouds coming into the picture later in the day. Then a few showers will sweep across northern Kentucky as a major flood system moves in from the northwest.

This upper level system will sweep into central and eastern Kentucky here on Tuesday with cool and gusty showers. The situation is even more typical of winter, so there is a chance of snow in the high mountains from West Virginia to western North Carolina. Some of these flakes may be flying at the highest elevations along the Kentucky-Virginia border.

With so cold air in the air and the freezing mark so close to the ground, some sleet is possible across central and eastern Kentucky Tuesday afternoon and evening. Incidentally, sleet is considered winter weather.

The cold wind will continue blowing into Wednesday and there is a chance we will wake up to a light frost. With clear skies, lows could reach the upper 20s and lower 30s.

Gusty winds will make it even colder Wednesday morning, with a wind chill in the low and mid 20s Celsius.

Frost and light frost would be expected on Thursday and Friday morning.
