Memphis Basketball vs UNC Score Today: Final Score, Highlights

Seth Trimble scored 31 points for North Carolina and the Tar Heels handed Memphis basketball an 84-76 loss Tuesday in a preseason charity exhibition at FedExForum.

Penny Hardaway’s Tigers – who return just one scholarship player from the 2023-24 season – controlled most of the first half and took a 33-31 lead at the break. But the Tar Heels (No. 9 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25) made key adjustments and led by as many as 15 points in the second half.

Memphis fought back late and cut the deficit to 6 points with less than two minutes to play. But North Carolina (playing without consensus All-American guard RJ Davis) was able to hold on for the win.

PJ Haggerty led the Tigers with 24 points and nine rebounds. Colby Rogers and Nicholas Jourdain each scored 11 points for the home team.

Memphis has one more exhibition game remaining (against Alabama in Huntsville, Ala. on October 28) before opening the regular season at home against Missouri (November 4).

Live score updates for Memphis Basketball vs UNC

The Tigers made life easier for North Carolina in the second half, committing 12 turnovers in less than 17 minutes. That compares to just seven turnovers in the entire first half.

UNC took advantage and turned those turnovers into 14 points since halftime. The Tar Heels, who led by as many as 15 points in the second half, are up 78-69 with 3:45 to play.

The Tar Heels came out of halftime strong, shooting more than 50% from the floor in the first 12 minutes of the second half to build a 59-49 lead.

Seth Trimble has up to 22 points for the guests. His career high in the regular season is 12 points.

Memphis held a 39-36 halftime lead despite shooting 45% to 35% from the field. PJ Haggerty’s nine points give the Tigers pace.

Nine Tigers scored at least 1 point in the first half.

Seth Trimble led the Tar Heels with 14 points at halftime.

Visitors to FedExForum tonight include Tee Morant (Ja Morant’s father) and Memphis Grizzlies players GG Jackson and Armando Bacot. Jackson played collegiately at South Carolina while Bacot was a superstar at North Carolina.

After taking a 27-16 lead, the Tigers cooled off offensively. They were three for their next 10 from the field, while the Tar Heels were 6 of 10 in the same period, cutting the Tigers’ lead to 33-31.

At the under-12 media timeout in the first half, the Tigers lead North Carolina 19-13. PJ Haggerty has 6 points while Tyreek Smith and Nicholas Jourdain have 4 each.

Memphis has controlled the ball well so far with only one turnover. The Tigers committed five turnovers and turned them into five points.

Tigers reserve Baraka Okojie missed all of summer training with a left shoulder injury that required surgery.

Okojie entered the game after the first media timeout and contributed two rebounds and a steal within a few minutes.

The Tigers controlled the opening tip and methodically worked the ball inside to center Dain Dainja, who scored the first points with a layup over the glass.

The Tar Heels responded with a 7-0 run, with Seth Trimble scoring 5 of those points.

Memphis fought back after that and cut the lead to 11-10 at the first media timeout.

Tigers: Tyrese Hunter, PJ Haggerty, Colby Rogers, Nicholas Jourdain, Dain Dainja

Tar Heels: Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Cade Tyson, Jae’Lyn Withers, Jalen Washington

North Carolina All-American point guard RJ Davis will not play in Tuesday’s exhibition game against Memphis, a Tar Heels spokesman confirmed to The Commercial Appeal. He left the program’s Blue-White scrimmage last week with a lower back injury. The spokesman said the decision was purely a precautionary measure.

Memphis center Moussa Cisse will also be sidelined on Tuesday. Hardaway said last week that Cisse was recovering from a groin injury.
