Packers News: Packers are sticking with Brayden Narveson

Brian Gutekunst said earlier this year that he needs to be more patient with kickers, and I’m starting to wonder if he’s accomplished that a bit.

Based on what we’ve learned over the last two seasons, it’s hard to imagine Gutekunst being more patient with his kickers. The position was riddled with inconsistency that cost the Packers points and games, but Gutekunst weathered the storm, first assisting Anders Carlson and then Brayden Narveson.

The mindset at this point is the same as always: The Packers believe in Narveson and believe he can improve. But like most of the season, it’s fair to ask why. Like Carlson, Narveson didn’t come to Green Bay with a long track record of accuracy, nor has he been able to turn things around. In addition to a 37-yard miss against the Vikings, Narveson is just 4 of 8 from 40-49 yards this season and has yet to attempt a kick from 50 or more yards.

In short, the Packers have a kicker who they don’t trust to make long field goals, nor is he capable of consistently hitting from close range.

Kudos to Gutekunst for sticking with his decision, I guess, but one has to wonder what it would take for him to make a change at this point. Patience is certainly a virtue, but hoping someone improves isn’t much of a plan.
