Early Voting in North Carolina for the 2024 Election | Where to vote in your NC county; Times, dates and busiest times

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The early in-person voting period for the 2024 North Carolina general election runs from Thursday, October 17th to Saturday, November 2nd at 3 p.m

In addition to the national offices up for election on the ballot, there will be competition for the positions of one NC Supreme Court justice and three NC Court of Appeals judges.

Here are the candidates:

  • Associate Justice of the NC Supreme Court, Seat 6: Jefferson F. Griffin (R) and Allison Riggs (D)
  • NC Court of Appeals Seat 12: Tom Murry (R) and Carolyn Jennings Thompson (D)
  • Seat of the NC Court of Appeal, Judge Seat 14: Valerie Zachary (R) and Ed Eldred (D)
  • Seat of the NC Court of Appeal, Judge Seat 15: Chris Freedman (R) and Martin E. Moore (D)

Many states hold elections for commissioners and boards of education. In several municipalities, mayors and seats on the municipal board are also elected.

Where can you vote?

The locations and opening times of the early voting centers in your district can be found here and here.

Any voter who is eligible for assistance can ask for assistance at their polling station. For more information about helping voters with disabilities, click here. Curbside voting is also available to those eligible.

Voters who received a mail-in ballot may drop off their ballot at their county elections office or an election official at an early voting location during election hours.

Best times to vote

Wake County says lines are historically shortest during the first few days of early voting.

The busiest times are around lunchtime on weekdays and the last three days of early voting.

Important voter tips

Please be sure to bring your photo ID with you. North Carolina voters must present ID upon check-in in order to vote.

Make sure you are registered. You can check whether this is the case here.

Same-day registration is possible during early voting, while registration is not possible for most voters on Election Day.

After the vote

Under NC law, all early voting, whether by mail or in person, is considered an absentee ballot.

You can check your ballot status using the voter search database in the Voter History section. This may not become apparent until several weeks after Election Day.

Dates and deadlines

Oct 17: In-person early voting begins
Oct. 29: Deadline for applying for a postal vote (5:00 p.m.).
November 2nd: Early in-person voting ends at 3 p.m.
November 5th: Parliamentary election day.
November 5th: Deadline for returning postal votes (7:30 p.m.).
