Woody Johnson comments on the Jets’ issues, Davante Adams exchanges ideas

ATLANTA — Woody Johnson isn’t giving up on the vision that his New York Jets could compete for a championship this season.

A day after the Jets fell to 2-4 in a mistake-filled prime-time loss to the Buffalo Bills, the team’s owner demurred when asked if the season could be salvaged.

This came a week after Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh and replaced him with interim coach Jeff Ulbrich, claiming the Jets had a championship-caliber roster.

“Saveable? We’re going to kick…you can add the words,” Johnson said as he held court with a group of reporters upon his arrival for an NFL owners’ meeting at a Buckhead hotel on Tuesday. “We’re going to do really well.”

No team in NFL history has ever made it to the Super Bowl after firing their coach during the season. But Johnson, despite glaring mishaps during Monday night’s 23-20 loss – the Jets committed 11 penalties, missed two field goals, scored just three points in the second half and missed a late scoring attempt due to an Aaron Rodgers fizzle out interception – insisted he was encouraged by the progression of the offense.

Among the topics Johnson addressed:

– He confirmed a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders to acquire Davante Adams, reuniting the three-time All-Pro receiver with Rodgers.

“We know they played together,” Johnson said. “I think everyone would be interested.”

— The Jets have given Haason Reddick permission to pursue a trade but remain hopeful they can find a solution that can bring the Pro Bowl pass rusher into play. Johnson is optimistic about the potential impact of Reddick’s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

“We like the agent,” Johnson said. “I do. He’s good. He knows what he’s doing. If anyone can get him out of the situation and get him to play, I think that would be better for the young player.”

– Johnson claimed he didn’t expect Rodgers’ involvement in firing Saleh.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “I make the decisions. I didn’t ask him. The press wrote about it and it’s not true.”
