After Monday night’s 20-23 home loss to the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers explained what happened during his interception during the Jets’ final offensive series of the game.

Rodgers was picked off by Bills cornerback Taron Johnson with 1:52 left as he tried to hit wide receiver Mike Williams deep down the field. Rodgers told reporters that Williams had taken the wrong path:

“It’s two vertical (routes). Allen (Lazard) is on the seam and Mike is on the red line. I look at Allen, he raises his hand and three guys walk with him. So I throw out a no.” -Look at the red line. And when I look there, he has to be on the red line every time.

After Johnson’s clutch interception that gave Buffalo the lead with a three-yard run, the Bills were able to run out the clock when quarterback Josh Allen scored the game-winning first down with a six-yard run on 3rd-and-4.

With the score tied 20-20 in the second half, Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein missed field goals on consecutive possessions as he struggled with the windy conditions at MetLife Stadium.

Buffalo took a 23-20 lead thanks to a field goal with 3:43 left in the fourth quarter, but it gave Rodgers and the New York offense a chance to tie or win.

The 40-year-old Rodgers had one of his best statistical games of the season, throwing for 294 yards and two touchdowns, and he did it by specifically targeting Lazard and Garrett Wilson, who both had over 100 yards and a touchdown.

Rodgers targeted Williams three times but couldn’t catch him, and apparently he wasn’t on the same page with his quarterback on that game-winning play.

Route concept aside, Williams slipped on the Jets’ final offensive play, allowing Johnson to dive in front of him and put the ball back in the hands of Allen and the Buffalo offense.

In seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Williams often battled injuries, but when healthy he was very productive, posting two 1,000-yard seasons and scoring 31 touchdowns during his Chargers career.

The Chargers parted ways with him in the offseason for cost reasons and the Jets signed him in the hopes that he would be an ideal complement to Wilson and Lazard.

Rodgers and Williams didn’t seem to gel, however, as he had just 10 grabs for 145 yards and no touchdowns in six games. For comparison, Wilson has 41 catches for 399 yards and three touchdowns and Lazard has 26 receptions for 354 yards and five scores.

Although Wilson and Lazard put up strong numbers, the Jets were heavily linked to Las Vegas Raiders superstar wide receiver Davante Adams in trade talks, as Adams reportedly harbored a desire to work with Rodgers again for several years was a teammate on the Green Bay Packers.

If this trade ultimately goes through, Williams might be the underdog, and he probably didn’t help his own cause by miscommunicating with Rodgers at a crucial moment.

The Jets could have moved into a tie for the AFC East lead with a win on Monday, but instead they now sit in third place with a 2-4 record while Buffalo sits at the top at 4-2.

New York’s next opportunity to get back on track comes Sunday night when the Jets take on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
