Nelson’s two goals helped the Islanders to a 6-2 victory over the Avalanche in Patrick Roy’s return to Colorado

DENVER (AP) — Brock Nelson scored his first two goals of the season 2:49 apart in the second period and the New York Islanders beat the Colorado Avalanche 6-2 on Monday night, giving coach Patrick Roy a win in his first game back in Denver.

Roy won two of his four Stanley Cup victories with Colorado and coached the team for three years before resigning a month before training camp in 2016.

Anthony Duclair, Kyle Palmieri, Anders Lee and Mathew Barzal also scored for the Islanders, and Ilya Sorokin stopped 32 shots.

Calum Ritchie scored his first NHL goal and Casey Mittelstadt also scored for Colorado, which was a double in its first three games. Alexandar Georgiev made 32 saves.

Takeaways

Islanders: After falling 3-0 at Dallas on Saturday night, they responded with an impressive game on Monday night. They were down 1-0 with just 1:01 to play, but scored the next four goals to take the lead. When Mittelstadt made it 4-2 at the start of the second half, Duclair responded with a goal six minutes later.

Avalanche: Georgiev played better, but a few of his mistakes led directly to New York’s first two goals. Lee scored when he couldn’t keep his skate on the right post and his failed attempt at a poke check left Palmieri with an open net.

Key moment

Trailing 3-1, Colorado was on a power play in the second period when defenseman Cale Makar’s blind pass was intercepted at his own blue line by Nelson and he beat Georgiev for a shorthanded goal.

Key statistics

New York held a 2-1 lead after the first half, marking the first time they had led after the first half this season. Sorokin had 10 saves in the first 20 minutes.

Next

The Islanders continue their road trip Thursday night in St. Louis. The Avalanche hosts Boston on Wednesday night.
