Nick Nurse reacts to Paul George’s injury after Sixers beat Hawks

The Philadelphia 76ers walked away with a 104-89 preseason victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night, but the focus is on Paul George, who left the game at halftime after playing just 12 minutes in the first half.

The Sixers later announced that George was out with a left knee hyperextension and Philadelphia turned to Caleb Martin to start in his place. One can only hope it was just out of precaution as opening night approaches.

After the win, coach Nick Nurse shared his initial thoughts on George’s injury.

“Just a hyperextended knee,” Nurse told reporters after the win. “We will examine him in the morning. That’s all we have.”

The Sixers signed George to a 4-year, $212 million contract in the offseason, so this would be a tough blow to Philadelphia in the preseason should he be sidelined for an extended period of time. Ultimately, it’s a knee problem, the severity of which no one will know until the Sixers can undergo some testing.

It’s just unfortunate because of the timing as the Sixers are trying to fit George into what they’re trying to accomplish on the field.

“Obviously you never want anything to happen to someone, but you definitely just try to get them to do things and they want to work towards things too,” Nurse added. “So that doesn’t give him a chance to do that and hopefully everything will be okay so he’ll be back with us straight away.”

The Sixers still have two preseason games left, the next one being at home against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday.
