New Philadelphia 76ers winger Paul George hyperextended his left knee in a preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night, the team announced.

George suffered the injury in the second quarter and left the game. He didn’t come back in the second half.

George played 12 minutes and scored eight points along with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The 34-year-old George signed a contract with a maximum term of four years with the Sixers in the offseason Alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, they form the NBA’s newest Big Three. The The team has high expectations for the upcoming regular season after failing to make the playoffs in the entire Embiid era.

Embiid is already out for the remainder of the preseason with what the team called left knee management. He did not travel with the team last week. The Sixers said Sunday that the team’s primary focus is keeping the oft-injured Embiid on an individualized treatment plan designed to support his health and well-being this season.

The Sixers begin the 2024-25 season next Wednesday, October 23rd at home against former head coach Doc Rivers and the Milwaukee Bucks on national television. At the moment, it is unclear whether George will be able to wear the suit and make his Sixers regular-season debut after having to leave Monday night’s game due to an injury.

Together with George, the Sixers signed veterans Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, Caleb Martin Jr. and brought back Kelly Oubre Jr. and Kyle Lowry, among others, in free agency.
