MNF: New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills prediction and game thread

Monday Night Football, Week 6. Tonight the New York Jets host the Buffalo Bills. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Bills are the away favorites by 1.5 points.

The 3-2 Buffalo Bills have lost two straight games after winning their first three games. The Bills have struggled a lot on offense lately, scoring just 30 points in their last two games combined and managing less than 280 yards of total offense in three of their last four games. The Bills, once a pass-happy team with Josh Allen at quarterback, are now a run-first team, with the team totaling fewer than 200 yards passing in three of the last four games. Overall, the Bills rank just 26th in the NFL in passing yards, 14th in rushing yards and 23rd in total offensive yards. That’s not exactly the offensive performance of past Bills teams. The Bills aren’t much better on defense. They rank 26th in rushing yards allowed, 31st in yards per carry allowed and 21st in total yards allowed. These are offensive and defensive numbers typically associated with cellar dwellers, not first-place finishers. What is the Bills’ secret recipe? Sales. The Bills have only two offensive turnovers this season, a remarkable number for a team with quarterback Josh Allen, who is traditionally a turnover machine. It’s probably a safe bet that the Bills will see some regression to the mean over the course of this season. The Jets hope to begin that regression tonight.

The New York Jets enter this game at 2-3, having lost two games in a row. In their last two defeats, they were able to win the game in the final seconds but were unable to seal the victory. The Jets look similar to recent seasons, with the offense being one of the worst in the NFL and the defense being one of the best in the NFL. The Jets rank 30th in rushing yards, 31st in rushing yards per carry, 28th in net passing yards per attempt and 27th in total yards on offense. That’s not exactly what the Jets expected when they traded Aaron Rodgers to lead them out of the wilderness. However, the defense was very good. The Jets rank 1st in passing yards allowed, 1st in passing touchdowns allowed, 1st in net yards allowed per attempt, 8th in rushing yards allowed per carry and 2nd in total yards allowed.

This game is shaping up to be a battle between two struggling offenses. The Jets offense faces a mediocre Bills defense, while the Bills offense faces an excellent Jets defense. With the Jets at home, this should work to the Jets’ advantage as long as they can avoid turning the ball over on offense. The Bills have relied on a +7 turnover differential so far this season to mask major deficiencies on both sides of the ball. If the Jets can avoid losing the turnover battle, they should come out of it with a win. I suspect the Jets will do just that and move into first place in the AFC East with a slight upset over the Bills tonight on Monday Night Football.
