Former Philadelphia 76ers player included in Kings-Spurs trade

The NBA saw its last trade on Monday night. According to Shams Charania from The athleteThe Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs have reached a deal that included a former member of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Jalen McDaniels was dealt to the Spurs on Monday along with a second-round pick. The Kings made the deal to “open up roster flexibility for a potential new addition,” according to Charania.

Although McDaniels ends up with the Spurs as part of the deal, he will not be heading to San Antonio. The plan is for the team led by Victor Wembanyama to do without McDaniels. If he goes unclaimed, he will hit the market again as an unrestricted free agent.

In 2023, the Sixers acquired McDaniels in a deadline deal. As they navigated through the 2022-2023 NBA season, the Sixers left behind standout defensive player Matisse Thybulle. In a multi-team trade, Thybulle went to the Portland Trail Blazers.

In return, the Sixers brought in McDaniels from the Charlotte Hornets. This year, McDaniels was in the middle of his fourth season with the Hornets. He joined the Sixers after playing 56 games, averaging 11 points and five rebounds while shooting 32 percent from the field.

McDaniels struggled to find his place with the Sixers. He played a total of 24 games and scored seven points and three rebounds. While McDaniels managed to hit 40 percent of his threes, he didn’t play a big role in the playoffs.

His first and only playoff run came in 2023 with the Sixers. McDaniels sat an average of 13 minutes off the bench in eight games. He scored two points and two rebounds per game. At the end of the season, McDaniels became a free agent and eventually signed with the Toronto Raptors.

Last season, McDaniels played 50 games for the Raptors. Once again he struggled to carve out a role for himself in a new situation. McDaniels was on the court for 11 minutes per game and scored three points and one rebound. He shot a career-low 34 percent from the field.

Last summer, McDaniels completed a trade with the Kings. While he made his debut with the team in the preseason, the Kings have decided to move on. It is unclear what will happen next for the 26-year-old winger.
