Slotkin has put country first in her career

I have spent my career proudly serving our country for nearly 40 years, in the Air Force, as Director of the National Security Agency, as Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and finally as Director of the CIA under former President George W. Bush.

I have always believed that the future and security of our nation should take precedence over politics.

This is exactly why I encourage Michigan residents to cast their vote for Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat from Holly, for the U.S. Senate seat. Slotkin is a determined, principled leader who always puts the country first.

Slotkin joined the CIA after 9/11, where she was quickly deployed to Iraq alongside our military as a Middle East analyst. I met her after she had already completed her second tour in Iraq when she came to the White House where we were setting up the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Beyond her careful preparation and expertise, I was continually impressed by Slotkin’s ability to inspire confidence in her colleagues and defend their views. I watched her speak truth to power in briefings with senior administration officials and defend herself with grace but confidence.

For Slotkin, standing by her beliefs is more important than appeasing those who stand before her, regardless of whether it serves her image or career. No doubt that is one of the reasons why President Barack Obama kept her on his national security staff. No matter who the president was, Slotkin stepped up to serve our country.

Even if we disagree on some points, Slotkin has always put the task of public service above himself. She helped pass historic legislation to support our veterans, combat the influence of the Chinese Communist Party and ensure the security of our nation – all while reaching across the aisle to find common ground. I know she will take the same approach to representing all of Michigan.

Now more than ever, our nation needs leaders who put their country above party. I can’t think of anyone who embodies this quality better than Elissa Slotkin. I encourage all Michiganders to send her to the Senate.
