The film Borderlands grossed $4 million on its opening day

The Borderlands film adaptation grossed just $4 million on its opening day at 3,125 locations.

As Variety reports, it seems that the Hollywood cast is not attractive enough for the $115 million production, despite increased ticket sales at Imax and “other premium large-format theaters.”

Variety points out that distributor Lionsgate has “secured itself financially” and recouped 60 percent of its production costs through international pre-sales. Nevertheless, the film currently has the dubious honor of receiving the worst reviews of any film released this summer.

The Borderlands movie has, of course, been in the works for a long time. It was first announced in 2015 before disappearing, and just when it seemed like the project was dead and buried, Gearbox announced it again in February 2020, this time with Hostel director Eli Roth at the helm.

Then top-class actors such as Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Gershiwn, Kevin Hart and Jack Black signed the project.

But then the reviews came in and… well, as Matt summed it up for us earlier this week, the first impressions weren’t great. Critics panned the live-action adaptation of Gearbox’s looter shooter, calling it everything from a “huge flop” to a “disaster.”

Since then, Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick has begged fans to give the film a chance, and Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford has “banned over a dozen accounts” on X for being “really mean” about the film.
