After Hurricane Milton caused devastating damage in Florida, residents are seeking help.

Milton hit Florida on Wednesday evening as a Category 3 hurricane and raced east across the state, causing devastating damage before crossing into the Atlantic Ocean. Although the Tampa Bay area was spared from a potentially catastrophic storm surge, Milton’s fierce winds and rains left destruction in its path and triggered deadly tornadoes far from landfall. Officials said at least 17 people were killed across Florida. Reports of damage are still coming in.

During his visit to St. Pete Beach on Sunday, President Joe Biden said that since he signed a disaster declaration on Saturday, more than 250,000 Floridians had asked for help – “the most in a single day ever in the history of this country.”

Here’s how you can help those affected by the storm:

Hurricane relief fundraiser

GoFundMe has launched a general fundraiser with funds going to people affected by a hurricane. GoFundMe distributes cash grants from this fundraiser directly to those affected by domestic hurricanes.

The money will go to “verified individuals who qualify and are raising funds for themselves or on behalf of someone else. We can also provide grants to fundraisers that benefit small businesses and community relief efforts, or to verified nonprofit organizations that coordinate long-term recovery.”
