    Schools will remain closed in parts of Florida on Monday, October 13th. 14, but largely not because of Christopher Columbus.

    This decision is made by individual school districts. Florida does not have Columbus Day or Indigenous People’s Day. Some schools have more general “fall breaks” instead.

    Since 1971, the holiday has been celebrated on the second Monday in October.

    Yes, all federal offices are closed, as are banks, the post office and some private companies. There will be no postal delivery.

    Indigenous Peoples Day was first proposed at a United Nations conference in 1977. It has become increasingly popular over the years as a counter-celebration to the Christopher Columbus holiday, as Columbus caused lasting damage through his acts of violence against the native peoples of the Americas.

    Approximately 29 states and Washington, DC do not celebrate Columbus Day. Last year, about 216 cities renamed the day or replaced it with Indigenous Peoples Day, according to renamecolumbusday.org. Some states recognize Indigenous Peoples Day by proclamation, while others consider it an official holiday.

    Biden declares Indigenous Peoples Day in 2024

    On Friday, the Biden administration marked Indigenous Peoples Day to “celebrate the tremendous contributions of Indigenous communities to the world.”

    President Joe Biden became the first US president to proclaim Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021.
