Severe storms ravage Sydney as Australians are warned to prepare for flash floods as they head home

Storms have devastated Sydney and surrounding regions, causing chaos as heavy rains battered the city.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning shortly after 3pm local time on Monday.

Severe thunderstorms will bring heavy rainfall which may cause flash flooding in Gosford, Sydney, Penrith, Parramatta, Campbelltown and Taralga over the next few hours.

At around 3:40 p.m., the weather office reported the latest status and said that severe thunderstorms in the warning area had temporarily subsided.

“However, renewed development of severe thunderstorms remains possible.” “The situation is being closely monitored and further detailed warnings will be issued if necessary,” the warning says.

Hail was recorded in several parts of Sydney, including the Emu Plains in the west, the inner west and the northern beaches.

At 3.30pm the Canterbury office rain gauge had received more than 23mm of rainfall.

Large areas of land between Tamworth and Muswellbrook also recorded more than 10mm.

Some flights to and from Sydney have been delayed or canceled due to the ongoing weather.

Sydney Airport urged travelers to check with their airlines for updates on their flights.

Sydney’s light rail network was also affected by flooding on the tracks, causing the L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford lines between Moore Park, Randwick and Juniors Kingsford to be temporarily closed. Service has since resumed.

Lightning strikes on Monday afternoon left thousands without power across Sydney and the Central Coast of New South Wales.

Almost 4,000 Ausgrid customers in Freshwater, Curl Curl, North Manly, Brookvale, Bexley, Kingsgrove and Hurstville suffered outages from 3pm.

The supplier expected power to be restored by 5:30 p.m.

The eastern states are in for a stormy week, according to Sky News Australia meteorologist Alison Osborne

“A high pressure system in the Tasman Sea and a trough extending across the eastern interior will combine forces and pull warm, moist air south from the tropics,” she said.

“In the meantime, a frontal system crossing the southeast will help create the perfect environment for showers and thunderstorms to develop across much of New South Wales.”

“Daily showers and storms are expected to hit several regions this week – meaning many will have to keep their umbrellas closed.”
