Results, points after Alex Bowman was disqualified from the NASCAR Cup playoff race at Roval

Nearly three hours after Kyle Larson’s victory at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval seemed to determine the Round of 8, the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs changed dramatically.

After appearing to advance with an 18th-place finish and a win in stage two, Alex Bowman’s No. 48 Chevrolet was disqualified because he failed the follow-up test. Bowman was relegated to last place and received one point for 38th place.

The violation caused him to lose 28 points, dropping him from sixth in the points standings to ninth.

In the drivers’ standings, Joey Logano improved from ninth to eighth and qualified for the championship again by making it to the third round.

In the Car Owners’ Championship, Bowman’s No. 48 Chevy fell to ninth place, which moved the No. 45 Toyota of Tyler Reddick to the eighth and final spot in the Round of 8.

This eliminates the possibility of a shared motoring championship in 2024 (which almost happened in 2022 when Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Chevy reached the championship round, but the final driver spot went to Chase Elliott. Prior to Bowman’s disqualification, Reddick had advanced to the championship round of 16). in the Drivers’ Championship, but the final spot in the Car Owners’ Championship (which earns more than driver points in season-end bonus money) went to Logano’s No. 22 Ford.
