A frost warning is in effect for parts of the Detroit metropolitan area; Cooler fall temperatures are ahead

Parts of the Detroit metro area are under a freeze warning as fall chill spreads across southeast Michigan early Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

A stretch of southeastern counties, including Oakland County and Washtenaw County, is under a freeze warning until 9 a.m., NWS Detroit said on X.

According to the weather service, once the warning comes into effect, temperatures could drop below 30°C and lead to the formation of frost.

Daytime low temperatures should only fall from here as the weather cools into the fall season, said Steve Freitag, a meteorologist with the weather service.

“This is pretty much a sign of fall and we’re pretty much on track for it to happen here for the first time,” Freitag said.

The frost could damage sensitive outdoor plants, including uncovered plants.

Falling fall temperatures are also expected in Metro Detroit starting this week, with a high of 63 degrees on Thursday and a low of about 46 degrees, according to the weather service.

Friday will be warmer with a high of 76 degrees and a low of 52 degrees, followed by Saturday’s high of 66 degrees and a low of 48 degrees.

Rainier days are also on the way from Saturday night, when there is a 60% chance of showers across the region. Sunday will also bring showers with a high of 61 and a low of 42.

The mercury will fall again on Monday and Tuesday, with levels expected to peak in the 50s and fall into the 30s at night.
