Dodgers leave Alex Vesia and Miguel Rojas from NLCS roster

LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers, as expected, did not add left-hander Alex Vesia or shortstop Miguel Rojas to the National League Championship Series roster they announced Sunday as both continue to battle injuries.

Rojas, the club’s everyday shortstop, has been battling a torn left adductor muscle for months and has managed the problem with injections and scheduled rest days. However, this only combated the symptoms and did not eliminate them. Rojas aggravated the injury in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres while attempting to reach for the second-base bag. He left the game half an inning later, clearly limping around the bases. The 35-year-old Rojas is coming off the best season of his career at the plate, posting a .283 OPS and a .748 OPS in 103 games.

Tommy Edman is expected to handle day-to-day shortstop duties in Rojas’ absence, with Game 5 hero Kiké Hernández likely to start in center field (barring a scenario where Freddie Freeman’s sprained ankle prevents him from playing and Hernández would slip in this case). third base). Veteran midfielder Kevin Kiermaier, who has already said this will be his last season, was included in the squad in place of Rojas.

Vesia had emerged as one of the most valuable left-handed relievers in baseball that season, posting a 1.76 ERA in 67 regular-season appearances and adding three scoreless appearances against the Padres in the NLDS. During the final inning, Vesia recorded a strikeout to end the seventh inning, but waved to the trainers before the start of the eighth inning, pointing out what he hoped was just a cramp in his side area. Further imaging studies on Saturday revealed an intercostal strain.

Anthony Banda, who emerged this season from a minor deal in May, will be the only left-handed hitter in the Dodgers’ bullpen when they face the New York Mets, who boast Brandon Nimmo, Jesse Winker and Jeff McNeil as left-handed hitting options Hitting with your hand.

Brent Honeywell Jr. took Vesia’s place on the roster. The NLCS begins Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.
