When asked what the Bengals need to change to compete, Joe Burrow had a one-word answer

After Cincinnati’s 41-38 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, quarterback Joe Burrow told reporters that the Bengals are “not a championship-caliber team right now.”

It certainly looks that way in the overall standings. The Bengals are 1-4 in Week 5 and have yet to win at Paycor Stadium in three tries. All four losses came by a single possession and it’s still early in the season, but it’s clear that the Bengals are in danger of missing the playoffs for a second straight year if they don’t bounce back soon.

What does Cincinnati need to change to become a championship-caliber team?

“Everything,” Burrow told reporters Wednesday.

Burrow is definitely doing his part. In five games, the fifth-year quarterback has thrown for 1,370 yards and 12 touchdowns, a league-high in the league, while completing 72.3% of his passes for a passer rating of 113.6. Cincinnati’s offense ranks fifth in the NFL in passing yards (263.0) and points (28.0) per game.

Burrow noted that he believes he is playing the best football of his career.

“I would say that, yes,” Burrow said. “I still can’t quite manage it the way I would like. … I still think I can still achieve another level of improvement.”

While the offense is thriving, the Bengals’ defense is a different story. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s unit allows the third-most rushing yards (151.4) and second-most points (29.0) per game.

“I know we can (argue),” Burrow later continued. “Whether we make it or not remains to be seen, but I know that with the players we have up there and the coaches we have up there, we can get where we want to go. It’s just a matter of getting it done.”

The Bengals hit the road in Week 6 to visit the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football. Week 6 is still a little early to say it’s a must-win game, but it certainly feels that way for the 1-4 Bengals, who started the year with Super Bowl hopes.
