The Red Wings are waiving Ville Husso and need a roster spot for the striker

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings granted goaltender Ville Husso a waiver on Sunday, but he may not be done with the organization just yet.

The Red Wings need to clear some space to bring back a forward from the Grand Rapids Griffins to replace Christian Fischer, who is out for Monday’s game at the New Yorn Rangers (7 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit) and is day-to-day with an injury – Assault.

Husso, who is in the final year of his $4.75 million contract and is coming off an injury-plagued season, is not expected to be picked up until Monday at 2 p.m. He can then be sent to Grand Rapids, clearing the way for the Red Wings to add a 12th forward. Coach Derek Lalonde said after Sunday’s optional practice that it had not yet been decided who that would be.

Possibilities include veteran Austin Watson, who signed a one-year deal last week, or prospects Carter Mazur or Marco Kasper. Kasper, their top pick in 2022, had a great camp and preparation, but for a short-term recall, the Red Wings could look to sign a veteran.

The 29-year-old Husso struggled in Thursday’s opening 6-3 loss to Pittsburgh and was ejected at 5:28 of the second period after allowing four goals in a span of 2:33 and a total of four.

The Red Wings sent defenseman Justin Holl off waivers last week (he cleared) and recalled him on Friday after Petry was injured. Holl played in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Nashville.
