Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs speaks of an unexcused absence

play

GREEN BAY – In a voice barely louder than Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs, he cited “some mental process” for skipping practice last week before the team’s trip to face his hometown Los Angeles Rams.

During his six-minute public speech, Doubs did not want to go into many details because his unexcused absence resulted in a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. When he returned to practice Wednesday, Doubs said, he reached out to his teammates. He also expressed remorse for how he behaved last week.

“I absolutely wish I had handled things differently,” Doubs said.

Doubs said he was uncomfortable going into more detail about the mental health issues that led to last week’s unexpected absence. The Packers receiver said “Yeah, I’m fine” when asked if he was OK. While Doubs did not provide specific reasons for his absence, he said Friday afternoon that his role in the crime was not a reason for it.

“No comment, man,” Doubs said. “This is a big offensive here. We have a couple of ball players in our room. I wouldn’t even go that route. I think it’s much more important than me personally finding my role. This league is all about winning football games.”

Doubs said he did not demand a trade from the team. He made it clear that he was content to remain with the Packers, saying several times that he was happy to be back in the locker room.

“I had to make sure the family got back together,” Doubs said. “I said there were some things happening off the field. So as far as the organization and the staff and the players are concerned, there is nothing to be done in that area. So I just want to be clear here.

“If we just talk about the moment, I’m just grateful that I’m still here. It’s a great team, great players, great support.”

He was asked if he needed to regain the respect of his teammates and he declined to answer.

Doubs’ surprise departure from the team last week left his teammates confused about what was going on. Running back Josh Jacobs said the focus in the locker room was on supporting Doubs.

Coach Matt LaFleur said he expects Doubs to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after practicing this week.

“He did a good job,” LaFleur said. “He went in and worked. Just did a great job.”

Doubs said he watched last week’s win against the Rams. He was happy for his team’s win but admitted it was “tough” watching without being able to play.

As the Packers move forward, Doubs said he hopes to prove not only that he’s “a ballplayer” but also “a team guy.” Doubs knows where he needs to improve to do justice to the latter.

“Just being a better communicator,” he said.
