Lieutenant Dan’s daughter fears her father is attracting attention after Hurricane Milton sends him to an “early grave.”

A woman who says she is the daughter of Joseph Malinowski, 54 – a man from Tampa, Florida, who went viral and was nicknamed “Lieutenant Dan” for his decision to ride out the approaching hurricanes Helene and Milton on his boat – is worried about his sudden fame and donations from well-wishers putting her father at risk.

Ashley Ann Malinowski voiced her concerns in a series of TikToks on Friday.

“Without all the money, Lieutenant Dan was doing just fine,” she told viewers in a video.

“You’re going to fuck famous people on TikTok, you’re going to blow him up and he’s going to be dead before he can fucking enjoy this boat and stuff. Because look at him after you all caught him and now he’s awesome in all these videos.”

His sudden viral fame would plunge him into an “early grave,” she continued.

“Yeah, I’m his damn daughter and I had to keep an eye on this man for ten years to make sure he was alive and now he’s going to get all this and probably die because of it.”

Joseph Malinowski garnered a lot of interest on social media and led to several high-profile news interviews when a local TikTok creator featured the Florida man saying he was trying to wait out the approaching storms.

“I’m not afraid of the storm,” Malinowski told NBC News in an interview from his boat. “I fear nothing except the government, the police, the mayor – everyone is trying to make me leave in the worst possible way.”

Tampa officials briefly took him to a shelter on Wednesday, although he reportedly returned to his boat the same day.

Terrence Concannon, the TikTok creator who originally shared Malinowski’s story ahead of the approaching Hurricane Helene, eventually published a GoFundMe page for him, which was soon flooded with donations totaling over $46,000.

Video artist Adin Ross also caught wind of Malinowski and offered him a streaming deal and more than $50,000 to buy a new boat.

Concannon said in a TikTok of his own on Friday that he received “numerous death threats” after helping produce “Lieutenant Dan,” named after the character in “Lieutenant Dan.” Forrest Gump, go viral.

“Something like this should never have happened,” Concannon said, describing Malinowski as a man he became friends with and wanted to help him get some money for a new boat and transportation.

Concannon said Malinowski lacks a state identification card, making it difficult to transfer all funds to him, but he is working with Tampa police to remedy the situation.

As The Independent As reported, Malinowski has a long criminal record.

As recently as August, he was charged with a misdemeanor for selling, operating or using a vessel without a title deed in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa. This case is still open.

Local newspaper WUFT in Florida reported that Malinowski was released in April 2022 after serving a year in prison in a criminal case for punching a police officer in the nose.

In February 2023, during an argument with a nearby woman who was smoking, Malinowski allegedly poured a 1-gallon container of gasoline onto a bench and lit it on fire, according to an affidavit viewed by The Independent. Malinowski then “sprayed” the woman with fuel, the document says. The woman was uninjured but said she was “scared for her life.”

A judge later ordered Malinowski to house arrest, citing his “violent past.” However, several reports said the case was dropped a month later for unknown reasons.
