Key ingredients to win: Saints vs. Buccaneers

In case you haven’t heard, New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler will make his first NFL start on Sunday when New Orleans (2-3) takes on Tampa Bay (3-2) at Caesars Superdome.

Additionally, the Saints will look to end their three-game losing streak.

PS New Orleans is a struggling team starting its third center this season while also starting without an offensive weapon: Taysom Hill (ribs), starting right guard Cesar Ruiz (knee), starting safety Will Harris (hamstring) and, of course, starting Quarterback Derek Carr (oblique).

Tampa Bay doesn’t care, and neither should the Saints. Here are some ways to minimize absences:

1. PROTECT THE TOWER:

It goes without saying that Tampa Bay will try to confuse Rattler and pressure him to make mistakes. Expect the Buccaneers to focus on taking away the run, forcing the Saints to become one-dimensional and targeting Rattler. Rattler’s new best friends – the offensive line – can help him the most by establishing an effective running game. The last thing New Orleans wants is for Rattler to throw the ball 45 times; it would not suggest the kind of balance required to be efficient. Receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed become more dangerous if the running game can force Tampa Bay to use more defenders to slow it down.

2. TIGHTEN(D):

If New Orleans needs to happen, it can’t just come down to Olave, Shaheed and running back Alvin Kamara. The tight ends need to be more involved. Key targets Juwan Johnson and Foster Moreau have combined for 16 catches, 128 yards and three touchdowns. If Rattler doesn’t have much time and needs to work quickly under Johnson and Moreau, this could be useful, especially if he isn’t dedicated to pass protection.
