Live Updates: SpaceX will launch Starship test flight 5

For years, there seems to have been no love between SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches.

Musk has repeatedly used X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter that he bought two years ago for $44 billion, to denigrate the FAA.

In a Sept. 17 post, he threatened to sue the agency for “overstepping regulations.”

Musk – who has taken an increasingly outspoken stance on politics and expressed his dislike of the Biden administration and his support for former President Donald Trump – also revealed on September 25 that he believes FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker “should resign.”

Musk has also claimed that the agency’s activities were “politically motivated” to punish SpaceX.

Musk’s claims came after the FAA proposed a $633,009 civil penalty against SpaceX for twice violating launch license requirements on flights of its Falcon 9 work rocket.

SpaceX has denied wrongdoing related to these requirements and said none of the allegations involve public safety. In a Sept. 18 letter, the company said it also notified the FAA in advance of changes to its launch operations and the agency failed to act in a timely manner.

Still, the FAA has granted SpaceX the long-awaited license to move forward with Starship’s fifth unmanned test launch. The agency announced Saturday that SpaceX had “complied with all safety, environmental and other licensing requirements for the suborbital test flight.”
