Texas players plant flag through Baker-Mayfield jersey after win against OU

Texas had bragging rights with its 34-3 victory over OU on Saturday in the latest edition of the Red River Rivalry.

And the Longhorns wasted no time taking advantage.

After the game ended, sophomore linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. placed a Baker Mayfield jersey on the ground at midfield in the Cotton Bowl. Senior defensive end Barryn Sorrell then planted a Texas flag through it.

Mussatto: Michael Hawkins Jr. couldn’t save the Sooners against Texas. OU’s offense goes beyond this point.

Mayfield famously grabbed an OU flag after a 31-16 road win over Ohio State on Sept. 9, 2017. The star quarterback then placed them through the “O” at midfield at Ohio Stadium.

But the decision to put a flag through a Mayfield jersey on Saturday was also in response to comments from OU players like linebacker Danny Stutsman, according to Hill. The Sooners earned a 34-30 victory over the Longhorns last season, and Stutsman celebrated the victory by selling T-shirts that read, “Oklahoma is only afraid of God. Texas is afraid of Oklahoma.”

“I just feel like it was the right thing for me,” Hill told the media when asked about his celebration. “I saw all the stuff they posted last year, so I think it was right for me to just throw a little hint of something at them.”

Sorrell also commented on X about flag-raising.

“Put this on a T-shirt,” Sorrell said. “#HookEm.”

Mayfield went 2-1 against Texas throughout his time as a starter at OU from 2015-17. The Austin, Texas native is now the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
