First quarter

NC State starts on the 25th

RESULT: Syracuse 3, NC State 0

8:13: Syracuse is using Dan Villari at running back, a little throwback to last year. He rushes to the 4. Kyle McCord can’t find Jackson Meeks on second down. For the first time, Syracuse fails to convert on third-and-6. New field goal kicker Jayden Oh does well and scores from 32 yards.

10:22: LeQuint Allen runs on first down for 2. McCord rolls out on second down but has no one open and has to throw it out of bounds. McCord converted 3rd-and-8 by fading back and finding Trebor Pena. Orange is now in the red zone.

11:09: Syracuse with another third down call, McCord versus Gadsden again. Orange to NC State 31.

11:15: The Orange’s first drive is a 2-yard run by LeQuint Allen. Another run for Allen. This time a 2-yard gain. Sets up the first third and long for the orange. Syracuse had to call a timeout to get into the game.

12:47: A second pass falls out of Trebor Pena’s hands, this time a deep shot on first down. McCord passes to Pena again for 8 yards. Second third down. Second conversion. This one from McCord to Gadsden.

2:04 p.m.: Syracuse opened with a 6-yard pass from Kyle McCord to Oronde Gadsden II. He also threw on second down, with Trebor Pena dropping the ball on a cross route. He goes right back to Pena for a 4-yard gain and a first down.

3:00 p.m.: Syracuse wins the throw and takes the ball on offense. Orange starts with its 25 after a touchback.

Before the game

Syracuse will play its first road game of the season against North Carolina State as it looks to improve to 5-1 (2-1). With a win, the Orange should move one step closer to their first top-25 appearance of the Fran Brown era.

The Orange will look to play a rare flawless game on special teams after giving up two blocked punts against UNLV last week. The Orange have also had problems this season with missed field goal attempts, kickoffs thrown out of bounds and a failed onsides kick recovery.

Head coach Fran Brown said the Orange have simplified their approach to addressing the punt blocking issue, with Jayden Oh taking over field goal duties from Brady Denaburg.

On the bright side, Kyle McCord will look to continue to be one of the most productive passers in the country against a North Carolina State team that has struggled.

The Wolfpack (3-3, 0-2) was considered a dark candidate to make the College Football Playoff this season, but was never able to live up to expectations this preseason. While Carter-Finley Stadium is notoriously a difficult venue to play in, it will be interesting to see how much energy the sellout crowd brings, especially with the school’s students on fall break.

Quarterback Grayson McCall, a key offseason transfer from Coastal Caolina, has been injured twice and is not expected to play. True freshman CJ Bailey was adequate as a backup, but neither quarterback was able to get the Wolfpack offense going.

However, NC State’s bigger problem this season has been its run defense. Normally a strength under head coach Dave Doeren, this year’s version is giving up 158.7 yards per game. That includes two top-25 opponents (Tennessee and Clemson) each rushing for more than 250 yards.

Syracuse’s running game hasn’t been great this season, but it turned in its best performance of the year against UNLV. It will also be interesting to see how the Orange fare in the run game after losing two starting defenders this season. The Orange are still without linebacker Marlowe Wax and wide receiver Yazeed Haynes.

Syracuse is 3-13 all-time against NC State and has lost its last four visits to Carter-Finley Stadium.
