MLB, Diamond could soon know which teams will stay with the struggling broadcaster

Which Major League Baseball teams will stay with broadcaster Diamond Sports Group and which teams will go elsewhere could soon be clarified.

Diamond has an important court date coming up on November 14th. Then Diamond, which has been in bankruptcy for a year and a half, will have the first day of a possible two-day confirmation hearing – when will it happen? determine whether the company has prepared a sufficient business plan in the eyes of a federal judge.

But James Bromley, an attorney for MLB, said Wednesday that he is in discussions with Diamond colleague Andrew Goldman about how to resolve the baseball situation before Diamond’s big day.

“We have now spoken to Mr. Goldman about the possibility of finding a path for the clubs that are not moving forward – Major League Baseball clubs that are not going to move forward, whether they are joint venture clubs or clubs that are following your law “It is within Honor’s jurisdiction – that if necessary, prior to the confirmation hearing, we could find a way to terminate and/or reject (contracts) if necessary so that we can give these clubs the opportunity to reach alternative agreements for the season “To meet in 2025,” said Bromley.

What is not yet known is which teams will take which direction. Eight clubs are still relevant to the conversation and can be divided into two groups: those that are subject to insolvency proceedings and those that are not because they are “joint venture” clubs.

Three teams are officially part of the lawsuit: the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays. Diamond has stated that he will keep the contract with the Atlanta Braves and terminate the contracts with the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.

Five other teams – the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals – are the “joint venture” teams. The Diamond stations where these teams continue to operate are not officially bankrupt. But there are also ways for Diamond to effectively escape them.

It happened in 2023 when Diamond decided not to pay the San Diego Padres in the middle of the season and then MLB took over the team’s broadcasts.

Diamond appears ready to move on with the other seven teams other than the Braves, but only under renegotiated contracts. MLB, meanwhile, appears to be running away from Diamond as quickly as possible.

The league announced Tuesday that four teams — a third of the dozen carried by Diamond last year — definitely would not return to Diamond in 2025. The Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins will be broadcast by MLB instead. The Texas Rangers have not yet completed their next home broadcast, but the league said they will not return to Diamond either.

These four teams have all terminated their contracts with Diamond at the end of the 2024 season, while the above eight teams still have remaining time on their contracts.
