A series of car break-ins were reported near the Tacoma Dome as heavy metal fans gathered for a concert

A series of car break-ins and attempted car break-ins occurred Thursday evening around the KORN concert in the Tacoma Dome area.

Tacoma Police Department Detective William Muse told The News Tribune that between 8:21 p.m. on Oct. 10 and after midnight, there were six vehicle theft complaints, all within about a mile of the Tacoma Dome, 2727 E .D St.

“If you have a neighborhood where there are a lot of vehicles or there is a large event going on, it could be the convention center or one of the hotels that is sponsoring a large event. . . “There are just people who take advantage of others in these circumstances,” Muse said.

He told The News Tribune that police received six complaints of vehicle theft near the concert hall last night. He could not confirm that all six were connected to concertgoers.

  • 2100 block of South C Street, 9:05 p.m. and 11:07 p.m

  • East 32nd Street and McKinley Avenue at 10:55 p.m

  • East 32nd Street and East D Street, 10:27 p.m

  • 2700 block of East D Street, 12:28 a.m. and 12:31 a.m

The KORN concert drew over 14,000 people to the dome last night, according to Muse, who helped with security at the event. Officers helped control traffic while concertgoers tried to find parking.

Because parking at the Tacoma Dome is limited, people often park on side streets that are not monitored during large events, he said.

“We are still trying to develop a workaround for this by increasing the number of patrol officers in this area when they are not engaged in actual operations,” Muse said. “They drive through these areas to act as a deterrent.”

He said the department always encourages people to be careful not to leave visible valuables in their car. Using a steering wheel lock, tire boot or other deterrent that shows a prowler or thief that “this car isn’t worth it” is a hassle but better than the alternative, Muse said.

Even leaving something like a gym bag in sight could result in a break-in attempt, he said. It doesn’t have to be a laptop or anything obviously valuable. People involved in criminal activity may suspect that a gym bag might contain credit cards, cash, or a cell phone, not just smelly clothes, and come out “$25, $50, or $100 richer than they were before they got in.” “The car was broken in,” he said.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said a guitar was stolen near the Tacoma Dome. The break-in occurred at South 38th Street and Pacific Avenue. Additionally, the location of the complaints was incorrectly stated at 12:28 a.m. and 12:31 a.m. These occurred in the 2700 block of East D Street.
