Key to Victory: SEMO vs. Tennessee Tech

SEMO has moved into the national top ten and is now ranked 9th after a commanding 37-26 win over Eastern Illinois. Quarterback Paxton DeLaurent is on the verge of breaking two major records against Tennessee Tech: He is just 35 yards away from doing so , becoming the all-time leader in passing yards and tying the record for passing touchdowns after last week’s game.

Key to victory

Offensive Line Play

SEMO must adjust after losing All-American offensive lineman and team leader Zack Gieg to a serious knee injury to EIU. Newcomer Carter Guillaume will take over his role. Tennessee Tech has the best run defense in the OVC, allowing just 88 rushing yards per game, while SEMO has an average of 102.3. The Redhawks will use several defensemen, including Payton Brown, Darell Smith and Cole Ruble. Additionally, the offensive line aims to protect DeLaurent, who benefits from one of the best pass protection units in the league and is in the top three in the OVC in fewest sacks allowed.

Efficient passing game

Leading the league with 1,669 passing yards and 16 touchdowns this season, DeLaurent is on the verge of history. He will look to compete with standout receiver Dorian Anderson, who is second in the OVC with six receiving touchdowns, and Mitchell Sellers, who is third with five touchdowns. Given Tennessee Tech’s vulnerability in the secondary, allowing 285.2 yards per game, it will be crucial for SEMO to take advantage of this matchup.

Stopping the run

Tennessee Tech leads the OVC with an average of 165 rushing yards per game, with Jalen Mitchell being their primary ball carrier, rushing for 249 yards and a touchdown on 55 attempts. SEMO concedes 125.5 rushing yards per game but only allows 202.5 yards through the air. With Tennessee Tech quarterback Jordyn Potts, a true freshman quarterback, throwing for 734 yards and six touchdowns with a 57.3 completion percentage, the Golden Eagles’ commitment to relying on their passing game will greatly increase SEMO’s chances of winning .

There is a lot at stake for the OVC in this matchup as both teams are 2-0. The Redhawks are on a four-game winning streak and the winner will claim sole possession of first place while the loser drops to second place. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Houck Stadium.
