3 injured, 2 in custody after shooting near Vanderbilt dorm

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Three people were injured and two others are still in custody following an alleged shooting near a dormitory on the Vanderbilt University campus Saturday afternoon.

The university had initially reported that five people were in custody on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred near Sutherland House, 1900 South Drive, around 4:30 p.m.

The reported shooting prompted Vanderbilt University police to issue a campus-wide warning to avoid the area and later provided an update that a suspect was in custody.

“Police are investigating an altercation between outside contractors performing maintenance work in an unoccupied Vanderbilt University dormitory,” the university said in a statement. “At this time, police are reporting shots fired by at least two people and five people are currently in custody.”

The university said the three injured people were at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The university stated that there is no ongoing threat to the university campus.

A witness told WSMV4 that there was an altercation between people from two different companies and that at some point shots were fired.

“I saw through my window a group of people running around, then the police came and one person was lying on the ground, other people just walked over to that person on the ground,” the witness said.

He said it was a terrible experience.

“After that, however, I started to doubt my safety, that’s the problem. When you hire outside contractors, you never know what can happen. They are not controlled by the university,” the witness said.

He is not the only one who felt this way: A mother wanted to pick up her daughter from the dormitory and found a crime scene.

“It was very scary that something happened here and we don’t know what is going on because when you see so many people here, something is happening on campus and she is on campus right now. So this is very scary for us,” said Sonalilka Singhall.

One of those involved apparently ran into the dormitory, while another person fled on foot into a nearby residential area.

According to the university’s website, summer residences closed on Saturday morning after the end of the summer semester. No students have moved into Sutherland House yet.

WSMV4 will provide updates on these breaking news stories.
