Guardians’ Lane Thomas launches clutch grand slam in ALDS Game 5

Lane Thomas might have sent the Guardians to the American League Championship Series in one fell swoop.

The Cleveland outfielder launched a massive grand slam off Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving the Guardians a 5-1 lead in the deciding Game 5 against Detroit.

The long ball came one pitch after Skubal hit Guardians star Jose Ramirez in the arm with a pitch, bringing first-and-tying for Cleveland.

Skubal, the likely 2024 AL Cy Young winner, entered the fifth inning after pitching 17 scoreless innings for the surging Tigers this postseason.

Thomas also hit a three-run home run in the Guardians’ 7-0 win in Game 1 earlier in that series.

The winner of Saturday’s Game 5 will travel to the Bronx to face the Yankees in the ALCS, which begins Monday night.
