Parker Meadows’ winning streak to start his playoff career deserves mention alongside Mr. Tiger

Detroit – Parker Meadows continues to light the fire under the Tigers.

Meadows led off Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday with a single and eventually scored on Riley Greene’s two-out single to give the Tigers the early lead in front of a sellout crowd at Comerica Park. It was an early spark in the Tigers’ 3-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians that gave them a road win in the AL Championship Series.

It was also a historic hit by Meadows, at least in terms of Tigers history.

With the single, Meadows became the first Tiger since a Tigers legend, Mr. Tiger Al Kaline, in 1968 to score at least one hit in each of his first five postseason games.

Kaline scored in his first six playoff games of the 1968 World Series.

“Being a leadoff hitter trying to start something,” said Meadows, who struggled as a leadoff hitter against righties (like Guardians starter Alex Cobb on Wednesday) and finished near the bottom of the order against lefties (like Matthew Boyd). Game 2. “I managed to do that today.”

“Keep that momentum going.”

In his first five postseason games, Meadows went 5 of 20 with a home run, an RBI and three runs scored. He also had a big hit in his second appearance on Wednesday with a grounder to the right side of the infield. It was a productive outing, as it moved Jake Rogers to third after Rogers led off the inning with a double. Rogers then scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Vierling to give Detroit a 2-0 lead.

This season, the Tigers are now 58-29 when Meadows plays, including 4-1 in playoff games. That’s good for a .667 winning percentage with Meadows, who also happens to have played a Gold Glove-caliber center field.

The Tigers lead the Guardians 2-1 in the best-of-five series and can secure victory at home on Thursday night.

“It would be good. It would be great,” Meadows said of the potential Game 4 victory in front of the home fans, who set a Comerica Park postseason attendance record of 44,885 on Wednesday.

“The city deserves it. They showed all year long.”
