Get the groove on at the Miami Carnival in Lauderhill – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

Turning 40 can be tough on your body. That’s why I’m so afraid of it! But not for the Miami Carnival! This year they’re getting their hips moving with some soca dance moves. Here’s our youthful baby face, Alex Miranda, with more. Alex?

This moving and exhilarating weekend of fun welcomes everyone, especially those who like to let off steam!

Miami Carnival is 4-0 this year!

John Beckford: “The big 4-0, yes, that’s it. The concert will feature at least 40 live performances by DJs and artists on stage. They have the food court, 50 vendors in the food court offering you everything you could imagine from any of the islands. If you dream about it and want to eat it, you can find it at the Miami Carnival.”

They received an entire park as a gift.

John Beckford: “Our best birthday present we have received so far this year is the support of the City of Lauderhill. So things start at Lauderhill in central Broward Park and then head to Panorama the following Friday, October 11th, steelband music, I’m sure you’ve heard of it. And then we start with the official J’ouvert, which is Saturday October 12th. And then the big day will be Sunday, October 13th.”

Saturday’s J’ouvert is like a bag of chips. Once you show up, you just can’t stop.

Nigel Alfred, president of the South Florida Carnival Band Leader Association: “It’s an experience. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll love it and want to come back.”

Because it’s a chance to let go and cause chaos!

Nigel Alfred: “Most of our bands also have water tankers behind them, so you get sprayed with water throughout the day to cool you down and of course everyone is allowed to throw paint, powder and mud. We had a band that even made chocolate, so you could bathe in chocolate all day long.”

With 23 participating bands from all over the USA, there will be a lot of movement.

Nigel Alfred: “In the Caribbean we actually call a band what you call a troupe or float in a traditional American parade. Our bands consist of trucks, 18-wheeler trucks, 35 feet with speakers from top to bottom blasting and playing music.”

And for those who can’t whine, just do this…

Nigel Alfred: “The music will take control, that’s the best I can say.” Anyone with experience will moan and twerk, as they say here. For those who don’t just look at someone and just follow them. At the end of the day you will make it because no one will judge you, they will encourage you and help you along the way.”

Tickets for this colorful event start at $30 and there is free park and ride.
