Caitlin Clark may have just won over more Taylor Swift fans than Kamala Harris. And Clark didn’t have to ask for any of it.

The viral resurfacing of a social media post Clark made while in college has given her a horde of aggressive new fans. In fact, it has made her the Swift Army’s newest revered ally.

Clark originally published the post immediately after Swift went public with her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce in September 2023. Clark welcomed Swift to the Chiefs fan family in the post.

“Taylor Swift, welcome to the good side,” Clark wrote in a post on X on September 24, 2023, with the hashtag “Chiefs Kingdom.”

Clark said she is a lifelong Chiefs fan, having grown up in suburban Iowa.

Over the past 24 hours, several Taylor Swift fan pages on social media have reposted Clark’s tweet following a controversial podcast episode hosted by Clark’s arch-rival Angel Reese.

Reese hosted a woman named Kayla Nicole, a commercial model, media personality, host and entertainment journalist who is popular on Instagram with more than 797,000 followers. The fan base has grown rapidly since the episode was released on Thursday after Nicole detailed her previous romance with Kelce and the serious aftermath.

“We’ve seen each other in public spaces before, but I think we’re both aware of the nature of his new situation, that there’s just no room for us to communicate publicly or acknowledge each other without it coming to this.” something crazy,” Nicole said of Kelce and his new relationship with Swift.

Nicole also claimed that she felt hatred towards the relationship since Kelce started dating Swift rather than her.

“I would be lying if I said this level of hate and just online chaos doesn’t affect me,” Nicole said. “It does, to this day. You can go to my latest post and people will be arguing with each other about why I’m worthless and I’ll never be a talented person and I don’t have a career.”

The comments have sparked a much-discussed controversy on social media. Some defended Nicole and sympathized with her for the alleged hate she received. However, others, and many who openly identify as Swift fans, have criticized Nicole and Reese for various reasons.

Many of those Swift fans have now declared themselves Clark fans in response to Reese’s interview. Clark and Reese have one of the hottest rivalries in women’s sports right now, as their respective fan bases have been passionately opposed to each other for over a year. Now the Swift army joins a side.

Clark and Reese have been linked since their first meeting at the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. At the end of the game, when her LSU Tigers defeated Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes for the title, Reese famously mocked Clark and pointed tauntingly at her finger to remind her who got the ring.

This sparked outrage from Clark’s massive fan base, including Bartstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who called Reese a “piece of shit” in a widely shared X-post following Reese’s gesture in the championship game.

They took their rivalry to the pros this year, as seen in four heated duels between Clark’s Indiana Fever and Reese’s Chicago Sky. The four encounters included a series of controversial, flagrant fouls on Clark by Reese and other Sky players. Reese hit Clark in the head with his arm as she tried to block a shot in their first WNBA meeting on June 1. One of Reese’s teammates, Diamond DeShields, posted screenshots of hate comments she received after she slammed Clark during their final meeting of the season on August 30.

Clark and Reese have never admitted that there is a “feud” between them. In interviews and press conferences, they only spoke respectfully about each other. But the fans are a different story. Since the 2023 NCAA Championship Game, the two groups have been notorious for attacking each other and the two players on social media.

Reese said Clark’s fans sent her death threats and took explicit AI pictures of her and sent them to her family.

“I think it’s really just the fans, their fans, the Iowa fans, now the Indiana fans, that are really just, they’re driving for them, and I respect that respectfully. But sometimes it’s very disrespectful. I think there’s a lot of racism when it comes to that,” Reese said on the first episode of her podcast on September 5.

Reese’s latest episode caused even more controversy and angered Swift fans. The criticism of Reese for recording Kelce’s ex triggered a reaction from the Sky newcomer on Friday afternoon.

“Hate pays too,” Reese wrote in a post on X with the painting toenails emoji. The episode garnered a lot of attention over the last day, which Reese will benefit from as a podcast host.

Nicole is also not the first victim of hate comments from Swift fans. Swift fans famously attacked another woman who was known to be in a relationship with a star Chiefs player. Brittany Mahomes, the wife of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was the subject of viral backlash for liking a post from Donald Trump’s Instagram account on August 13.

The post outlined the former president’s political agenda for 2024. Swift fans knew Mahomes through her friendship with Swift, attending Chiefs games to see Patrick Mahomes and Kelce play.

Many of these Swift fans shared screenshots of Mahomes’ liking of the post, making them the target of online attacks. Brittany, a pregnant mother of two, has faced backlash on multiple Instagram posts. It thrust her and her husband into the national political conversation amid a tumultuous election cycle, as Swift was a staunch Democratic supporter.

After Swift endorsed Harris on September 10, Trump said in an interview with Fox News on September 11 that he liked Brittany Mahomes more than Swift.

Patrick publicly praised his wife following Trump’s comments the same day, but refused to endorse any political candidate.

Swift’s initial endorsement of Harris also sparked a reaction from Clark, who liked Swift’s Instagram post announcing the endorsement.

When asked why Clark liked this post, the basketball star did not support Harris but said she wanted to use her platform to encourage Americans to vote, echoing Patrick Mahomes’ message. Reese also didn’t support Harris, but praised Michelle Obama in a post on X for her speech to the DNC on August 20.

But now, as more Swift fans support Clark following Reese’s interview, they are joining a fan base that has at times drawn criticism for being out of step with Swift’s values. Some WNBA players, including Reese and Connecticut Sun player Alyssa Thomas, have accused the Indiana Fever fan base of racism, while Sun player DiJonai Carrington called Fever fans “the nastiest fans in the (WNBA).”

Clark disowned some of her own supporters during Fever’s exit interviews on September 27.

“They are not fans. These are Trolls” Clark said.

Now, Clark is apparently ready to gain more fans who are just anti-Reese, thanks to Swift’s rapid fan base.
