Playing at the spectacularly presented Woodville Golf Course, the experienced Matthew Millar led the field in Round 2, but early trouble brought players such as his Canberra compatriots Maxwell and Simpson.

Paired with Millar for the final round, Maxwell (68) was 6-under in his round and 10-under overall before dropping three shots on his final three holes to finish the day at 7-under.

Simpson (67) teeed off at 8-under for the tournament on his final hole, only to miss the par-4 17th and end up in the field with Maxwell at 7-under.

Jordan Mullaney’s 6-under 66 was the worst round of the tournament and put him straight into third place, while Millar’s even-par 72 was enough to secure fourth place.

How the winning laps developed

The par-5 18th was Simpson’s first hole of the second round, and a birdie was the ideal start to a 2-under 70 on the first day.

The par-5 holes continued to provide good fodder as he hit the par-5 third, which he followed up with three straight birdies at the turn at Woodville.

He made his first bogey of the day on the par-4 12th, but responded immediately with a birdie on the 13th, another par-5.

Like Simpson, Maxwell made his move on the first holes at Woodville.

Maxwell birdied the par-5 third and then made an eagle on the par-5 sixth to make the turn at 3-under.

He had the tournament under control when he made three birdies in four holes from the par-4 12th, but a double bogey on the 16th and a bogey on the 17th required a birdie on the 18th to leave Simpson 7-under -to achieve total points.
