Boeing will cut 10% of its workforce and halt production of most 767s due to a union strike

Boeing will lay off 10% of its workforce, about 17,000 employees, and cut production in the coming months due to an ongoing union strike.

CEO Kelly Ortberg, who took over as chairman in August, told employees in a memo Friday that the job cuts would include executives, managers and employees.

“Our company is in a difficult situation and the challenges we face together are difficult to overstate,” Ortberg told employees, saying the situation “requires difficult decisions and we must make structural changes to ensure that we remain and can remain competitive.” We can supply our customers in the long term.”

The company employs approximately 170,000 people worldwide, many of whom work in manufacturing facilities in South Carolina and Washington state.

They have also postponed the introduction of the new 777X to 2026 instead of 2025. The delay is due to the recent discovery of a defective part that led to test flights earlier this year.

The troubled aerospace company continues to face a month-long strike involving more than 33,000 workers in the greater Seattle area. The strike halted production of the 737 Max, Boeing’s best-selling aircraft, as well as the 777 and 767. The company still makes 787s at a non-union plant in South Carolina.

The strike was triggered after workers overwhelmingly rejected interim collective bargaining offers offered by the company.
