Dan Aykroyd praises “Saturday Night” film as a “triumph”

Dan Aykroyd praised Jason Reitman’s film at the start of “Saturday Night Live,” calling it “pretty accurate” and a “sure contender for Best Picture.”

The comedian was one of the original cast members of the NBC sketch show and is played by Dylan O’Brien on Saturday Night.

“I shake my head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumphant ‘SNL’ film. Wow! “What a driving, captivating, funny, beautifully cast and acted, exciting, adventurous, music-filled ride,” Aykroyd tweeted on Friday.

He enthused that the film, which unfolds as the “SNL” cast prepares to go live for the first time in 1975, is a “perfect window into the creative process at the highest level.”

“Pretty accurate too,” Aykroyd added. “I was there that night and had a wonderful time reliving it…Don’t miss it, whether you know the show or not. It’s a masterpiece in its own right and a surefire contender for Best Picture.”

The comedian and the Reitmans, of course, have a long history: Aykroyd starred in the two original “Ghostbusters” films directed by the late Ivan Reitman and appeared in the 2021 sequel “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” directed by Jason Reitman ( Gil Kenan directed the latest film in the series, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Aykroyd receives written permission for all films, having co-written the first one with Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis.

“Saturday Night” is in theaters now.
