Hurricane debris sparks major fire at Clearwater scrap metal recycling plant

Firefighters battle a large structure fire caused by hurricane debris in Clearwater.

The fire broke out at a scrap recycling business on Gentry Drive at 12:12 p.m., the city said in a news release. Officials believe the fire will continue to burn for a “long time.”

No further information was initially available, including whether any injuries had been reported.

The city reminded residents to properly dispose of hazardous materials. Hazardous chemicals and items can be taken to Pinellas County Waste Disposal. The following two drop-off points are open:

  • Household Hazardous Waste Center: Drop off materials at 2855 109th Ave. Tuesday through Friday and the first and third Saturday of each month from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. N. in St. Petersburg. Large lithium-ion batteries affected by the storm, such as car batteries, lawn mower batteries and e-bike batteries, must be disposed of through a private recycling company.
  • Household chemicals collection events: These events take place throughout Pinellas County on select Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The events will take place on October 12, October 26, November 23 and December 14 at 29582 US 19 N. in Clearwater.
