Columbus Day is celebrated on Monday, October 14th, commemorating the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. In recent years, many have advocated calling the holiday Indigenous Peoples Day because Columbus was a colonizer who enslaved Native Americans in the Americas.

Pennsylvania still refers to the holiday as Columbus Day, but cities like Philadelphia have adopted its new name as of 2021. Pittsburgh has also stopped calling it Columbus Day.

Some retailers and organizations are closed as the holidays approach, but most stores are still open and operating as normal.

Banks: Closed

Local government: York, Lancaster and Adams counties are closed. Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon and Perry counties are open.

Federal Government Offices: Closed

State government offices: Closed

Grocery stores: Most of these are open regularly, including Giant, Walmart, Wegmans, Lidl and Trader Joe’s.

Liquor stores: Operating on a regular schedule.

Libraries: The Dauphin County Library System, the Lebanon County Library System, and the Middletown and Hershey public libraries are open. In the Cumberland County Library System, the Amelia Givin Library is closed.

PennDOT Driver License Centers: Closed October 12th to 14th

Pa media group: Open

Post offices: Closed

Public schools: Most school districts, such as Central Dauphin, Cumberland Valley and Lebanon, give students days off from school or use them as in-service teacher days.

Garbage collection: Most carriers offer a regular pickup schedule.

Retail stores: Most are open.
