Tesla’s ultimate goal with the Cybercab is to provide an “individualized mass transit vehicle.” In addition, the Robovan allows Tesla to transport a larger group of people at the same time.

The “We, Robot” event showed that Tesla didn’t just design Cybercab, Robovan, and Optimus because they were cool or for profit. Tesla has a clear vision of the future in which people have more time, more space and less physical work.

Elon Musk did not directly name Tesla’s goals, but only hinted at them It during his brief appearance on stage.

“When we think about transportation today, there is a lot of pain that we take for granted and think is normal. Like having to drive through LA in three hours of traffic.“With autonomy you get your time back,” said Musk, explaining the full benefits of the Cybercab.

Musk once again described a world in which autonomous vehicles like the Tesla Cybercabs could carry passengers while their owners are not using them.

“How many hours per week are cars used? Your average car is just being used around 10 hours per week out of of 168 hours. So The vast majority of the time Cars just do nothing. But if they are autonomous, they could be used five times – ten times – more often,” Musk explained.

The Tesla CEO continued that with autonomous vehicles constantly on the move and in use, the demand for parking spaces would be lower. This would allow cities to use parking space for parks or more useful Facilities.

Customized mass transit vehicles are nothing new in the world. In fact, some countries use smaller vehicles for transportation, such as the tuk-tuk in India or the tricycle in the Philippines, which only cover short distances and specific areas. Tesla’s Cybercab is similar to a tuk-tuk in that it only seats two people, can travel short distances, and fits on smaller roads. However, it is designed for countries like the United States, where “short trips” can be longer distances compared to countries like the Philippines.

Tesla’s “We, Robot” event was definitely one for the history books Elon Musk predicted it. While Cybercab, Robovan, and even Optimus were definitely sights worth seeing, it was Tesla’s future targets that were the real eye-catchers.
