Although the running back can be activated from IR next week, the 49ers don’t expect McCaffrey to return until November.

The good news is that the 49ers have begun moving forward with the star’s rehab; However, the process is very slow. McCaffrey participated in his first fieldwork this week, which was a step in the right direction.

The running back did not experience any flare-ups after his first appearance on the field and the 49ers will be careful to keep the process slow to avoid setbacks.

Before the season, fantasy managers were quick to bring in the star running back. Just minutes before the 49ers’ Week 1 game against the New York Jets, it was announced that McCaffrey was out with a calf strain and Achilles tendon problem.

It was a devastating loss for San Francisco’s offense. It seemed like the McCaffrey injury couldn’t get any worse until it did. The 49ers placed McCaffrey on injured reserve in Week 2.

On September 30, it was announced that the running back had Achilles tendonitis in both legs. Through five games this season, McCaffrey has yet to play in a game for the 49ers in 2024.

The injuries have been brutal for San Francisco. Several starters had to take a break due to injuries. In one game, Brandon Aiyuk was the only starting offensive weapon on the field. George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and McCaffrey were all absent from the competition.

The 28-year-old led the NFL with 2,023 receiving yards last season and was tied for the league lead with 21 touchdowns. McCaffrey’s performance in 2023 earned him AP Offensive Player of the Year honors.

San Francisco offensive tackle Trent Williams gave a positive update on the McCaffrey situation on Tuesday.

“He said he was doing better when I last spoke to him a day or two ago,” Williams said on The Rich Eisen Show. He said treatment was going great, rehab was going great. I think he is extremely confident that he will be back in the squad soon. I don’t know how soon, but I’m definitely expecting it this year.

The 49ers will wait until November for the return of their best offensive weapon.
