Juuse Saro’s injury update before the start of the season

The day before the Nashville Predators open the season against the Dallas Stars, the team is dealing with an injury to starting goaltender Juuse Saros.

The team announced Wednesday that Saros is dealing with a lower-body injury.

Saros was not present at Tuesday’s practice at the Centennial Sportsplex because the team said it was a maintenance day. He was on the ice on Wednesday, but as a limited participant. He was away from the net during team practices and worked separately with goalkeeping coach Ben Vanderklok.

After training on Wednesday, Saros played down any injury concerns.

“It’s nothing bad,” he said. “Nothing crazy.”

He also stated that the injury occurred in the first half of Saturday’s preseason game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Saros played the first period, then Scott Wedgewood took over in the second period.

After three days without ice, Saros believes he is feeling better.

“I’m making progress,” he said. “Feel much better today than yesterday. Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow.”

Coach Andrew Brunette said he couldn’t confirm who would start in net on Thursday.

The 29-year-old Saros received an eight-year, $61 million contract extension in the summer. He finished 35-24-25 with a .906 save percentage last season and finished fifth in Vezina Trophy voting.

The team signed Wedgewood to a two-year deal over the summer to back up Saros.

On Wednesday, the Predators announced that goaltender Matt Murray has been called up from the AHL Milwaukee Admirals.
