Macklin Celebrini shines for the San Jose Sharks in loss to St. Louis

SAN JOSE – Macklin Celebrini’s spectacular NHL debut was spoiled by an even more spectacular comeback by the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues scored three goals in the third period to tie the game, with Justin Faulk equalizing with 47 seconds left in regulation before Brayden Schenn scored 45 seconds into overtime, giving the Sharks a bitter 5-4 defeat in front of a sellout crowd provided in the SAP Center.

Still, Celebrini had a spectacular NHL debut while offering a tantalizing glimpse of the future, scoring a goal and an assist in the first period on Thursday as the Sharks built a 4-1 lead.

Fabian Zetterlund scored a power play goal and Barclay Goodrow added a shorthanded goal in the second period for San Jose.

Sharks goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood had a solid performance in his season debut, making 29 saves in the first two periods to help his team overcome a series of puck-handling issues in the first period. San Jose had a 22-9 lead in the first period before they began to clean up their game.

Celebrini finished with 17:35 of ice time and became the youngest Sharks skater to score two points in his NHL debut at 18 years, 119 days. The record was previously held by Marco Sturm, who was just 19 years old when he scored a goal and an assist for the Sharks in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks on October 4, 1997.

The Sharks started 0-5-0 two years ago and were 3-9-3 after the first month, eliminating them from any playoff consideration. Last season, San Jose had one of the worst starts in NHL history, going 0-10-1 from the start and going 3-15-2 at the quarter-point.

The Sharks were sloppy in the first 20 minutes, turning the puck over and over while trying to break out of their own zone. But Celebrini almost put them ahead with a goal after 20 minutes.

Celebrini took a pass from William Eklund as he entered the Blues’ zone, entered the offensive zone and took a few steps before turning in front of Blues defenseman Ryan Suter. The pass was intended for Eklund, but the puck instead bounced off Blues defenseman Matthew Kessel and slipped past goaltender Joel Hofer, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead with 7:01 left in the first period.

The goal sent the crowd into hysterics.

St. Louis later tied the game on a goal from Pavel Buchnevich with 1:50 left, but the Sharks took the lead for good on another brilliant play from Celebrini.

Celebrini worked the puck behind the Blues’ net, turned and found an open Toffoli, who quickly fired it past Hofer for his first goal as a Shark and the 261st of his career.

The Sharks got a sure-fire goal at 8:26 of a much cleaner second period when Zetterlund buried a close-range pass from Mikael Granlund past Hofer for a 3-1 lead. Then, after Blackwood made a great save, the Sharks scored a decisive goal. When Goodrow took a penalty for the Sharks, he made a partial breakaway and shot at Hofer that found its way into the net.

The Sharks needed that goal as the Blues stormed back with goals from Radek Faksa and Suter just 3:17 apart.
