Quick Reactions Week 6 2024:

For the third game in a row, the Seahawks tried to mount a late comeback, and for the third game in a row, despite much fighting, they failed to finish the job. This time the Seahawks had to try to overcome a 20-point deficit that came from big plays on defense, turnovers on offense and turnovers on special teams.

Geno Smith, who has been fantastic this season, wasn’t as sharp as usual, leading to two interceptions and the defense not getting the final stop they needed, leading to a 36-24 loss at Lumen Field.

Here are five quick reactions to Thursday night’s loss:

  1. Big plays were a big problem for the defense.

The Seahawks defense was looking to turn things around after a rough two-game stretch, and while there were some positives, particularly in the second half, the 49ers were able to do a lot of damage with explosive plays in the first half.

The biggest play of all, of course, was Brock Purdy’s 76-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel, who initially cleared the ball on the left sideline, but then, perhaps due to a slightly underthrown pass, Julian Love misjudged the ball in his attempted tackle missed, allowing Samuel to run down the sideline to score the score.

There was also a 38-yard run by Jordan Mason, who fended off several tackles during the play, to set up a field goal, and there was a 29-yard run to give George Kittle a wide lead on the first drive of the third quarter to bring, a play that…set up one of his two touchdowns that night.

In the second half, the defense made a few key stops that gave the offense a chance to get back into the game, but when the Seahawks needed one more stop to get the ball back in the final minutes, the 49ers running back broke, Isaac Guerendo, from a 76-yard run that nearly tied the game.

Thanks in part to these explosive plays, the 49ers were able to accumulate 484 yards of offense, an average of 8.1 yards per play.

  1. Turnovers have been a problem for the Seahawks this season and were once again costly on Thursday.

In each of the Seahawks’ last two losses, two fumbles proved costly, and on Thursday the Seahawks again suffered losses due to turnovers. On the first drive of the game, the Seahawks were moving the ball well and were in 49ers territory when, under pressure, the normally accurate Geno Smith missed a pass intended for Tyler Lockett high, likely resulting in an interception deep in 49ers territory that cost Seattle points .

In the second quarter, the 49ers extended their lead by three more points when Laviska Shenault Jr. deflected a kick return, giving San Francisco a narrow field.

The Seahawks were able to claw their way back into the game despite those two turnovers, but a third turnover in the fourth quarter proved crucial. With the Seahawks trailing 23-17 and beginning a drive deep in their own territory, Smith attempted to hit DK Metcalf on a cross route, but 49ers cornerback Renardo Green was able to undercut the route for the pick. That set up Brock Purdy’s second touchdown pass of the night to tight end George Kittle, giving the 49ers a two-score lead.

The second interception was just part of a tough day for Smith, who has been so good this season but hasn’t shown his usual sharpness this season. Smith still threw for 312 yards and a touchdown to Tyler Lockett, but missed several throws he normally makes, including interceptions, and finished the game completing 30 of 52 passes, well below the 71.9 percent completion rate he was set for beginning of the game.

With these three turnovers, the Seahawks have now committed multiple turnovers in four of their six games and have committed at least one turnover in five of six games.
