Bruins fans will love Jeremy Swayman’s words after his contract extension

It felt like an eternity as Bruins fans around the world waited for news that Jeremy Swayman and the club had reached an agreement. The news finally came on the last day of training camp, when Swayman signed a lucrative $66 million contract that would keep him coaching the Bruins for the next eight years.

The deal was kept secret because when Swayman showed up at Warrior Ice Arena wearing his own hockey gear, Bruins assistant equipment manager Matt Falconer was surprised to see the star goaltender.

“Hey! Are you back?” Falconer asked Swayman during the latest episode of NESN’s “Behind the B.”

Swayman confirmed he was back and traveling with the team to Florida. But Before he would officially return to the Bruins, one more detail had to be clarified: he had to actually sign the contract.

After dropping off his pads and goalie bag in the locker room, Swayman made his way across the rink to meet with Bruins general manager Don Sweeney and make it official.

As Sweeney signed his part of the contract, a wide grin began to creep across Swayman’s face. And then Sweeney and Swayman shook hands to begin the latest chapter in Boston.

“There it is,” Sweeney said.

“Let’s do this, baby,” Swayman replied.

“…Now you have to go to work,” Sweeney told Swayman.

“About time,” he replied.

“Yes. You did. “You said it best,” Sweeney said.

Sweeney and Swayman addressed the media following the announcement and the 25-year-old goalkeeper revealed the only goal he has had in mind since signing the new contract.

“The motivation is a Stanley Cup … that’s all I care about,” Swayman told reporters. “I can guarantee you that this step and this chapter of my career will motivate me beyond what I have had so far.”
