Three-time NBA champion Danny Green announced his retirement on Thursday.

“I never thought I would write this letter, even though I knew this day would eventually come,” Green said in a social media post. “My life revolved around this game, which took me around the world and introduced me to incredible people. It’s been an incredible journey that I’m immensely proud of and I couldn’t have done it without the support of so many.”

Green was taken 46th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft, played 832 games in the regular season and became known as the quintessential “3-and-D” winger. The UNC product shot 40 percent from three-point range for his career and won titles with the Spurs in 2013-14, the Raptors in 2018-19 and the Lakers in 2019-20.

Green’s final NBA appearance was a game for the Sixers on October 28, 2023. After James Harden was traded to the Clippers, he was waived.

During the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, Green was important for the Sixers both on and off the field. Green’s outside shooting and penetrating skill were often valuable alongside superstar center Joel Embiid. He gained a reputation as an honest, intelligent leader who spoke openly with star players.

“I remember Manu (Ginobili) and Tony (Parker) early on,” Green said in a March 2022 interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia. “‘Do you want me to stay here? Do you want me to slide up?’ The better the familiarity and chemistry between these guys, the safer it will be for you to ask questions and get a feel for what they like. Whatever the coaching staff likes: It’s a little bit of both. You have to figure out both, and a lot of times it’s just communication.”

Green was among teammates and former teammates Tyrese Maxey thanked after winning the 2023-24 Most Improved Player award. The All-Star guard called Green “a leader” who has “helped him a lot” in various aspects of professional life, such as effectively resting his body.

Maxey, Dana Barros and Green are tied for the Sixers record for three-pointers made in a single game. Green hit nine goals in overtime against the Heat on January 12, 2021.
