The Rays are asking for time and “patience” as the franchise assesses the damage Hurricane Milton did to Tropicana Field.

The roof of the baseball stadium in St. Petersburg was torn to pieces Wednesday evening as the storm swept across Florida.

“We expect to be able to assess the true condition of Tropicana Field in the coming days and weeks,” the team said Thursday. “In the meantime, we are working with law enforcement to secure the building. We ask for your patience during this time and encourage those who are able to donate to organizations in our community that are helping those directly impacted by these storms.”

Due to the strong wind, white fabrics from the roof of the baseball stadium hung from the catwalks, creating a surreal scene.

Tropicana Field’s dome structure was built to withstand winds of up to 110 mph.

Geiger Engineers, who installed the roof in 1990, told The Athletic that the roof was “long past its designed lifespan.”

Winds peaked at 101 miles per hour in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the press release, no one was injured as a result of the damage to the ballpark.

Milton was the second hurricane to hit Florida in just a few weeks, following Helene, which made landfall on September 26.

Tropicana Field was used by the state as a base camp for 10,000 people in the days before Milton.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a news conference Thursday that first responders were relocated before the hurricane hit the state.

The Rays have played at Tropicana Field since 1998.

The team plans to open a new, $1.3 billion, 34,000-capacity stadium before the 2028 season.

Opening Day at Tropicana Field isn’t until March 27, when it will host the Rockies to kick off the 2025 season.
