Former Cavaliers winger Danny Green is retiring

Danny Green calls it a day. He announced this on his podcast on Thursday: “I am officially leaving the sport of basketball, the NBA. It was a great run.”

Green was drafted in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009. During his long, 15-year career, he played just two seasons (2009 and 2023) and a total of just 28 Wine and Gold Cup games.

Green spent the majority of his career with the San Antonio Spurs (8 seasons). Green was then traded to Kawhi Leonard in the blockbuster deal in 2019. From then on, he was more of an assassin for teams contending for titles and looking for quality veterans with championship experience. Green is a three-time NBA champion, winning in 2014 (Spurs), 2019 (Raptors) and 2020 (Lakers).

Although Green made significant contributions on multiple rosters, it seemed his body wasn’t the same over the last few seasons. After suffering a torn ACL and ACL in the 2022 postseason, it seemed like the wheels had completely fallen off. Green was never able to significantly improve playing time, having only played 13 games in these appearances with an average playing time of 11 minutes.

The Cavaliers were part of those back-end years when they plucked him from the buyout market in 2023. In the end it became more of a distraction for the team as Green didn’t get many runs and as a result false promises were made to Green. Green announced afterward that he was “left in a strange situation” in his second stint with the Cavaliers.

With his podcast “Inside the Green Room” and occasional appearances on ESPN, Green is now a voice in the media. It seems this is the career path for Green in a post-gaming world. “I’m looking forward to the next chapter, the next journey,” Green said.
