Does New Jersey celebrate Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day?

play

New Jersey will join the federal government in celebrating Columbus Day on October 14, 2024.

Many state offices and authorities will remain closed on this day. Many public school students will also have a day off.

The state still celebrates Columbus Day, although some states have renamed it “Indigenous Peoples Day” or eliminated holiday celebrations altogether.

What is closed on Columbus Day?

The United States Postal Service is among the federal services that will not be operating on Columbus Day. Other federal and state offices will also be closed. For example, the NJMVC offices will be closed.

Even though most schools will not be open that day, you should double check your calendar as some schools may be open.

Why does New Jersey celebrate Columbus Day?

In 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus traveled from Spain and landed in the Caribbean. Although he never managed to reach a country that would later become part of the United States, he is considered the discoverer of America.

Some cities and states recognized Indigenous Peoples Day after a controversy over Columbus’ legacy and how he treated the native peoples who already lived on the land.

However, New Jersey remains true to Columbus Day and celebrates the Italian-Americans who have lived in the state for generations.

In a 2023 Facebook post, Gov. Phil Murphy said he celebrated all Italian Americans who have enriched the state through their culture and accomplishments.
